No drills. No plays. No coaching. Just an open gym and an opportunity for high-level Colorado High School Girls and prospective college student-athletes to play pick-up basketball for FREE with no pressure from parents or coaches.

Sessions are managed exclusively by the players. They decided the scores they played to, they picked teams, they called their own fouls and added their own stipulations (prove the last bucket with a free throw). We, as adults, simply opened the gym doors, flipped on the lights and sat back to enjoy watching some high-quality basketball. Simple as that.

In today's Youth/High School basketball scene, players are constantly managed by coaches (and parents from the bleachers) every time they step onto the floor. What happened to good old fashioned pick-up? Where you just play and compete to stay on the court.

This free play aspect of the game is something that is sorely missing from the developmental process today because adults simply can’t just let go of the reigns and let their kids experiment with their game. They’re micromanaged everywhere they turn.

The goal of these open gyms is to create a “just play” environment and we film the sessions every now and then to make it more fun for the players and spread some awareness about the girl's basketball culture we’re trying to enhance here in Denver, Colorado.

Parents aren’t allowed to spectate and no coaching and/or solicitation of programs of any kind is permitted. It’s Coach Mychal's promise to players that there will never be a flyer handed out or a marketing email list created from these sessions. This is purely to give back to the game.

A group text is sent out when an open gym is scheduled and the players show up. That’s it. Coach Mychal Martinez is simply the organizer and works with several other coaches, clubs, high schools and parents who share a similar vision to bring these groups of high-level girls together so they can work on their game.
